Crescent Credit Union Recognized With Social Responsibility Award

September 20, 2011, Brockton, MA – For the second straight year, the Massachusetts Credit Union League awarded Brockton-based Crescent Credit Union 1st Place in the asset category of $200-$500 million in the state level competition of the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition Award. The League has forwarded Crescent’s entry on to the national competition.
The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition Award is given to a credit union for its social responsibility projects within the community. Crescent Credit Union was recognized for its efforts in helping to address issues involving high-risk youth in the City of Brockton, primarily through its fundraiser walk in which credit union employees raised over $15,000 for the Old Colony YMCA Strong Kids campaign, and through the summer soccer program Crescent initiated with the YMCA and the New England Revolution professional soccer team.
“We’re proud of the contributions Crescent Credit Union and, especially the contributions Crescent Credit Union employees have made to the communities we serve,” said Crescent president Robert Gustafson. “We’re also thankful to our members, neighbors, and partners for their ongoing support in these difficult economic times.”
Dora Maxwell was an early credit union pioneer. One of the original signers of CUNA’s (Credit Union National Association) constitution, she worked as an organizer for the movement’s trade association and held numerous volunteer positions at the local and national level. In addition to organizing hundreds of credit unions, she developed volunteer organizer clubs and worked with organizations on behalf of the poor.

            Dominic Desiata cell: 857-203-2393
Bank tenants dealing with Bank of America will testify at rally.  Interviews available upon request.

Background: We have been fighting for these demands for 4 years:
v     Stop post-foreclosure no-fault evictions.  Wall St. Banks received billions in bailouts.  Why should these same banks evict families in foreclosed buildings who are willing to pay rent?  This causes homelessness, disrupts neighborhoods, and drives down values.
v     Reduce principal to current real value as part of loan modifications or after foreclosure sell back to occupants at current real value.  Millions of homeowners who can’t afford their mortgages at the bubble price of their loan can afford a mortgage at the real value of their home.  Banks can get a percentage of equity appreciation that would be more profitable than foreclosure.  Wall St. Banks produced the bubble.  They are responsible when it burst.
Principal reduction is now being debated at a national level.  The 50 Attorneys General asked for principal reduction in order to settle their law suit against the major banks.  The Banks are resisting this call.  Bank of America rejected principal reduction and has been urging Attorneys General to back off the demand.
